The Ultimate Guide to Kennebunkport in June, 2025

Welcome to our family adventure in the charming coastal town of Kennebunkport! As the New England weather begins to warm and gentle sea breezes fill the air, June becomes the perfect time for a memorable getaway with your family and friends.

For our family, June is our favorite time to visit Kennebunkport. We’ve visited numerous times with and without our kids. We love exploring the quaint downtown area as well as enjoying fresh seafood. Our kids love the Trolley Museum, and I adore the beautiful old New England homes.

Join us on a journey filled with sandy beaches, picturesque landscapes, and a great collection of family-friendly activities that make Kennebunkport a gem on the Maine coast. I’m excited to share with you my expertise and why the month of June is the best time for a summer retreat to Kennebunkport.

Why I love Kennebunkport in June

If you’ve read some of my other Maine posts, you know I’m a huge fan of traveling in June for several reasons. First, we live in a suburb of Atlanta, and our kids finish school in late May, while New England students go a few more weeks. We have learned there’s a sweet spot in mid-June where the crowds are low, essentially missing the peak season. This is one of the best things about going to one of the cutest coastal towns in Maine this time of year.

Rental prices and hotel rates are also slightly cheaper in early to mid-June. While we searched for a rental property, I found a lot of availability. Our family rented this adorable historic home within a short walk of downtown.

Our family has traveled to Maine in mid-June three times in the last few years, and I highly recommend it!

Typical Weather in June

  • Average High- low 70’s
  • Average Lows- low 50’s

Having visited in June many times, we have experienced a wide range of weather. On one summer trip, we bundled up for the mid-50s as this was cold for Southerners for June. Other times, the temps have been in the beautiful 70s and tipping into the 80s. On our last trip, it was really warm during the day, but temps dropped at night. Luckily, you will experience many sunny days in June.

Pro tip- pack layers!

It may still be a little cool in June, especially in the mornings, so pack layers and sunscreen while on the water!

Beaches

Kennebunkport’s location on the coast grants visitors access to beautiful beaches. If you desire some time frolicking in the chilly Atlantic (still chill in June) or playing in the sand, pencil in some time at one of the gorgeous beaches. Remember that the water temperature will be cooler than in the later summer months. The beaches are a great place to relax.

Kennebunk Beach is a popular destination and is split into three regions- Mother, Middle, and Gooch Beach. Many visitors love Goose Rocks Beach for the tide pools, an oasis for kids to frolic in for hours.

Near the Kennebunk River, you’ll find Colony Beach. The limited parking deters many, so it is less crowded, and the water tends to be warmer here. This may be the best beach for June, especially early in the month. Some even consider Colony the most scenic beach.Lastly, Parsons Beach is a little further from town but a paradise for nature lovers.

Pro Tip: starting in mid-June, many beaches require beach passes.

Lobster Tour

One of my favorite memories from my first trip to Maine was a lobster boat tour. I enjoyed learning about lobsters; it was one of the prettiest boat rides.  Rugosa Lobster Tours is a highly-rated tour company that operates on a real wooden lobster boat. This is a perfect activity in the summer months.

Sunset Cruise

A sunset cruise is a memorable excursion during your summer vacation. This sunset cruise guides guests through a scenic trip along the Atlantic coast on a luxury catamaran.

Historical Activities

Kennebunkport’s history dates back to the mid-1600s when it was a small village focused on shipbuilding and fishing. In the 20th century, Kennebunkport gained national attention as the favorite vacation destination of the Bush Family. On the scenic Ocean Avenue, you can drive by their beautiful estate, Walker’s Point.

For history enthusiasts, there’s an abundance of activities that highlight beautiful old homes and the region’s rich history.

Seashore Trolley Museum

Explore the first electric museum in the United States. My husband and boys loved this museum and would return in a heartbeat. You can admire the property’s impressive collection of old train cars.

While there, you can view meticulously restored trolleys from various cities or enjoy a brief train ride. The restoration shop showcases trolley cars currently undergoing restoration. This museum is an ideal excursion for anyone who loves trains.

White Columns

For guests looking to experience the rich history of the town, consider a tour of White Columns. The Kennebunkport Historical Society operates White Columns, one of the most impressive historic properties in town. Built in the Victorian Style, the same family owned the property for years and meticulously maintained the original furnishings. As you walk through the beautiful home, you will learn of the three generations of the Perkins-Nott family that called this home.

At Christmas, you can take a candlelight tour of the home, so if you love Kennebunkport, book your next holiday trip!

Experience Kennebunkport

You can easily spend a day exploring Kennebunkport on foot. Park the car, explore the locally owned shops and fresh seafood, and pick up a sweatshirt to remember your trip!

Shopping

In downtown Kennebunkport, there’s great shipping for tourists. Dock Square is a great place to start your shopping adventure in the center of town. There’s something for everyone, from local gift shops to baby stores and antique shops. Kennebunkport has several art galleries, especially in town off Dock Square. Don’t miss grabbing a sweet treat at The Candy Man, one of our kids’ favorite places.

Local Seafood

I may have mentioned this a time or two, but I love the fresh seafood of New England. I can’t help but eat every day, including many lobster rolls. Nothing in the South can compare to a Maine lobster roll.

Mabel’s Lobster Claw is one of my favorites in the entire region. I suggest making a reservation as it is very popular and open seasonally. In addition, it has limited seating, but there is a casual walk-up counter next door for guests. I love their blueberry cocktails, chowder, and fresh lobster rolls. Sit on the patio to enhance your experience. We had the best meal here on our last day and I highly recommend it.

In the heart of town, the Clam Shack is extremely popular. Don’t be shocked to see lines in the busy summer season of guests waiting for their fresh seafood. Other popular choices include the Tides Beach Club restaurant and the Cape Porpoise Lobster Co. If you love lobster rolls as much as I do, consider going north a little bit to explore the best lobster rolls in Portland, Maine. This would be the perfect excursion for a 1/2 day.

You also want to try an exquisite farm-to-table meal at Earth at Hidden Pond. Pro tip- make a reservation! Lastly, consider picking up freshly made sandwiches from Cape Porpoise Kitchen for a busy day of exploring.

Day Trips

Kennebunkport’s location is ideal for short trips to nearby towns. On our extended trip to Kennebunkport, we spent a lot of time exploring the town, but it also allowed us to take side trips that really enriched our overall vacation.

Portland

Portland, Maine, is a short drive to the north. I suggest you go on a day excursion to see some of the best highlights of Portland, such as Portland Head Light, one of the most beautiful lighthouses in New England. Downtown has quaint cobblestone streets, fresh lobster rolls, and locally owned shops. If traveling with kids, Portland has some fun activities, such as the Children’s Museum.

Portland is a great town with or without kids. I’ve done both and highly recommend traveling with your kids or a getaway with your significant other! If you want to avoid the hassle of planning the excursions, then there are some amazing tours to choose from. Your guide take care of all the details and you just have to show up for a fantastic tour of this beautiful historic city.

You can always use Portland as a home base to explore Kennebunkport. We’ve done this option too.

Ogunquit

Next to Kennebunkport, Ogunquit is one of my favorite Maine coastal communities. If you don’t have time for Portland, make time for a ½ day in this town, just a short drive to the south. I suggest waking up early, grabbing a delicious breakfast from a local Ogunquit restaurant, and then exploring the town. Ogunquit is one of the best places to capture a New England summer.

My favorite activities are browsing the small shops in Perkins Cove before hopping on the Marginal Way, a walking path that lines the Atlantic. You are sandwiched between beautiful New England homes and the stunning Atlantic Ocean as you walk. In June, vibrant flowers line the walkway as well.

On the Marginal Way, my kids love to explore the rocks and head down to the beach to dip their feet into the ocean. Park Benches dot the pathway so you can sit and soak in these gorgeous views anytime. I love this part of Ogunquit, and if you only had time for one activity, this should be it! Trust me- this path made me fall in love with Maine many years ago.
