Traveling Charleston, SC

Best Time to Visit: Spring and late fall are ideal for exploring Charleston, as early fall can still be hot. Winter is also a great time to visit—just check the forecast and pack layers!

Summer Considerations: The Lowcountry summers can be sweltering, and the mosquitoes can be relentless. If visiting during the hotter months, consider pairing your trip with a beach getaway to nearby Hilton Head. Don’t forget to bring bug spray and sunscreen if traveling in the summer or early fall!

Best Places to Stay in Charleston

When traveling with my kids, I love staying in a vacation rental for the added space, kitchen, and laundry amenities. We found a delightful four-bedroom home in the Cannonborough neighborhood on our recent trip.

While we had to drive to reach many of Charleston’s main attractions, the area had plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance, along with a welcoming neighborhood feel.

If you’d rather stay closer to the action on King Street, the Hyatt Place or Hyatt House are great family-friendly options. For those looking for a more upscale experience, Charleston Place offers a luxurious stay in the city’s heart.
