How to Enjoy a Spring Break in Hilton Head, South Carolina

Are you debating on spending spring break in Hilton Head? Great news- you’ve come to the right place, and I’m here to tell you it is a great time to visit HHI.

I’ve visited Hilton Head numerous times over the years, and it is beautiful. Spring is the best time of year for a visit, as you are probably ready for a break from those cold winter months. The warm weather and beautiful beaches are a perfect combination.

Hilton Head, South Carolina, is one of the premier spring break destinations in the South. Follow along to see why you should visit this spring.

Spring Break Months

For most of the US, Spring Break falls in March or April. States with large Catholic populations plan the week around Easter. In many southern states, we have the same week each year. For instance, many Georgia schools take the week off in early April.

Besides public schools, college campuses also have spring break usually in the same period. Southern colleges typically range from early to late March. Other spring breakers will be in the area regardless of the time, as it is the perfect place for a getaway.

Tips for Visiting Hilton Head

  • bring sunscreen
  • bring bug spray
  • BEWARE of Alligators! Alligators call the small ponds and waterways on the island home. DO NOT feed the alligators, walk closely to the edge of water or taunt/harass them. If you are not familiar with alligators, they are dangerous and not friendly.

Reasons to visit HHI in the Spring

March and April are the perfect time to visit Hilton Head. There’s a wide assortment of activities like water sports, golfing, and bike riding for the whole family. Spring break season is a terrific time to visit the area before the peak of summer crowds.

In addition, the weather is one of the best things about the months as it’s not blazing hot, but it is also a relief from the winter months.

    1. Beach

    Hilton Head Beaches

You can’t visit the island without spending time on the beach with their wide, expansive, sandy shoes. It is perfect for sunbathing, bike riding, or playing in the sand. Our kiddos loved running and playing on the beach on our last trip to Hilton Head.

It may be too cool to swim in the water, but the temps may not bother little ones. You could dip your feet in the water!

Many vacation rentals and hotels provide direct beach access. Other areas have public access points, too.

Coligny Beach offers visitors direct access to those beautiful beaches. Free public parking, bathrooms, outdoor showers, seasonal lifeguards, and beach chair rentals exist. This is an excellent option if you are staying further than walking distance to the beach.

    2. Harbor Town

Visit Harbor Town during your Spring Break in Hilton Head

    Harbor Town

Nestled in the large Sea Pines community, Harbor Town is one of the most popular spots on the island. Guests enjoy shopping, dining, or renting bikes to explore the beautiful neighborhood.

You’ll want to check out the iconic lighthouse that has become the symbol of Harbor Town.

    3. Biking

A bike ride through Hilton Head is a fun way to explore the island. Some communities, like Sea Pines, have extensive bath paths for guests. I love renting bikes while on a beach vacation, especially here.

Even if you don’t stay in Sea Pines, you can rent bikes in Harbor Town. I did this one afternoon; it was a relaxing way to see the island’s natural beauty.

    4. Water Activities

The opportunities for water sports are extensive. Besides swimming and playing at the beach, guests can rent kayaks/paddleboards or go on organized tours

For those who love to fish, consider booking a charter or tour. You can have a knowledgeable guide take you out, so you don’t have to worry about the hassle of renting a boat on your own. Fishing tours are a great excursion while visiting the island.

If you are traveling with kids, consider one of the many dolphin tours available in the area.

    5. Golf

Hilton Head is a golfer’s paradise and truly a premier destination. There are 26 golf courses in the Lowcountry so that you can plan an entire trip around a new course each day.

If you visit in April, you could attend the PGA RBC Heritage tour. Buy tickets in advance for this annual golf tournament.

    6. Coastal Discovery Museum

The Coastal Discovery Museum is an interactive experience highlighting the unique history and geography of the Lowcountry. The property spans 68 acres, and guests can explore the salt marshes and live oaks.

Each season, they offer unique activities. For instance, they offer a director’s walk, Birding opportunities, a heritage garden tour, blue crab discovery, and a Gullah heritage tour.

    7. Arts Center of Coastal Carolina

The arts center is a performing arts theater in Hilton Head. As you prepare for your trip, check out their calendar to see what events occur during your vacation.

    8. Sea Pines Forest Preserve

    Hilton Head

The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is a treasure of 605 acres, highlighting the natural landscape of the Lowcountry. Guests can explore on walking paths or horseback. You can also take a guided boat tour, horseback ride, fishing expedition, or wagon tour.

    Tips-

    • You cannot ride bikes on the walking paths.
    • Stay away from alligators
    • You must have a fishing permit
    • There are picnic tables available.

    9. Day Trips

Hilton Head is an excellent base from which to explore the coastline. If you want an easy day trip, venture to Beaufort, Charleston, or Savannah. If you want to spend extra days in South Carolina, consider a few days in quaint Greenville.

Neighboring Daukuskie Island is a terrific destination for an excursion. I stayed here a few years ago for a beach vacation and loved it. You can book a charter or rely on a ferry.
